PIM in DIY, Building & Installation

Best of both worlds

Although mentioned in one title, the DIY sector and Building & Installation branch are very different from each other. They both serve different target groups; have different products; different sales models and so on. So why the collective approach? Because many companies, whether manufacturers or wholesalers, are active in both domains. And exactly those companies face the challenge of serving two different target groups with completely different requirements when it comes to what information they need and how to receive it.

Easiest way to define the difference in target groups is B2C vs B2B. In DIY point of sales is the retailer that serves the consumer with large retail outlets with sales staff on-site to answer questions on the spot, while in Building & Installation point-of-sale in most cases is the wholesaler selling large volume straight from warehouse to the professional B2B installation companies. And both of them need different information from the same product.

Lets take a package of screws. A retailer would like to know the dimensions and weight of the box for shopping display purposes, while the installation company needs to know how many are in a box, for what material to be used, how much weight a single screw can hold etc. However simple and incomplete it might be, this simple example demonstrates the difference in need for product information.

To help you manage all these requirements, two standards are available, GS1 DIY and ETIM for the professional Building and Installation market.

GS1 DIY

GS1 stands for Global Standard and is an independent, non-profit organization. GS1 develops uniform international standards for the identification, capturing and sharing of data.

Within for example the Netherlands, the food-, pharmacy-, do it yourself (DIY)-, healthcare- and fashion industry all use the GS1 data standard. Each industry has drawn up agreements on which product data to exchange and how this should be done.

ETIM

The ETIM (European Technical Information Model) classification model, mainly covers the construction and installation industry. It is a product data model like no other: the list of product attributes is almost endless. Although an overlap with GS1 (DIY) exists, ETIM serves a different target group than GS1.
